Here for Domestic Abuse Victims
Pobl’s Pembrokeshire support team is now taking calls from domestic abuse victims across the county, offering reassurance, as well as vital advice and support to those in need, during what is a very difficult time.
Whilst many support groups have been closed due to the current situation, the Pobl team was approached to step outside of their traditional tenancy support function to offer a domestic violence crisis line for 5 days of the week.
The team recognised the need for the service and quickly adapted to the new working arrangements.
Now, from their own homes, Pobl support workers are taking calls during the week and working towards implementing a rota system to allow them to cover a full 7 days.
“We are into our third week of offering this service and we’ve seen a 55% increase in calls week on week. People are now isolated from their normal support networks – whether they’re friends, family members or work colleagues – and that’s the ideal situation for perpetrators.” Annette Brenchley, Pobl’s Area Manager for Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion
National helplines are still available, but they are being inundated with calls. In offering local support, Pobl can ensure that victims in Pembrokeshire do not have to wait in lengthy queues and can access help and support sooner.
The Pobl support workers focus on the following :
- Assessing immediate danger, involving emergency services if required
- Safety planning
- Arranging emergency accommodation
- Exploring non-emergency housing options
- Advising on the contents of emergency bags
- Working with police to implement protection orders

Each call that the team receives is unique, but there is one piece of advice which we can all take away and it’s focussed on the Silent Solution System.
“In an emergency, if you dial 999, you will get through to an operator. If you’re in a situation where you are unable to speak, you should then dial “55”. The operator will transfer your call to the police, who will be able to listen in and react appropriately.” Annette Brenchley
