Site based learning helps apprentice Dafydd to pursue his career ambitions

Dafydd has worked with the company for nine months and has been on this particular site since April 2020.

“My role is to assist Tim (the Site Manager) with whatever tasks he needs me to do, including paperwork and site inspections.” Dafydd told us. “I am also studying for a HNC in ‘Construction in the Built Environment for Site Managers’ alongside my time on site.”

Dafydd is currently in the fourth year of his course and hopes to continue his education by going on to complete a degree. His placement with JEHU Group has made a real difference to his studies:

This apprenticeship is a perfect opportunity for Dafydd, who wants to be a site manager in the future.

“I really like the way I’ve gone about my career, starting with college to get a grounding and gain some knowledge, and then going onto site. I’ve got some friends who have gone straight to university to do their degrees, but it means they’ve got no idea about what site life is actually like. Site-based learning is great, and I’d really recommend it.”

“I enjoy working here, it’s great. Jehu is all about the people. It’s a large company, but everyone is tight knit, and it’s got a family feel: even though I’ve only been here nine months, I know the bosses and the bosses know me. They’re all really supportive.”

“Dafydd joined Jehu to work alongside the project team in Bury Port. Having already attended college seeking his qualifications, he had an introduction into the industry through college, but sought a practical understanding of the day-to-day Construction world. Starting as an apprentice trainee myself, I know the significance of seeing technology details on site, implementation of build strategies and the importance of dialogue with component workmen and women. Dafydd’s first few months involved getting to understand the Construction environment and assisting with elements of safety management.” “Dafydd has slowly grown into the role and has gained confidence; working with others, ability to problem solve and understanding of process/procedure. With more experience comes bigger responsibility and Dafydd is becoming a key member of the site team.
