Llys y Seren care home in Port Talbot has been shortlisted for an Age Cymru Award, in recognition of the exceptional contribution made to the lives of residents.
Nominated in the Care Home Award category, staff at Llys y Seren have been acknowledged for going that extra mile to ensure residents enjoy a fully enriched life.
Karen Rogers, Manager at Llys y Seren, said
I’m really proud of the staff team here, we’re always trying to do new things and improve how we do things to make this a great place to live.”
“We work with other organisations a lot to improve the lives of residents, for example we’re currently working with Cardiff Metropolitan University’s CARIAD research centre to develop interactive devices that stimulate memories or sensations associated with happy times for residents who are in the later stages of dementia.”
“We’re always talking to residents about what they want to do; Zumba’s been really popular because the instructor’s adapted the class for both able bodied residents and those who use wheelchairs and the off road jeep safari we did in Margam Park recently was great fun! And for the last 10 years, staff have been volunteering to take residents on holiday to Trecco Bay in Porthcawl, why should holidays stop when you move into a care home? We all benefit from a change of scenery every now and then.”
As well as residents and staff, families are an integral part of the success of Llys y Seren; a children’s play area has recently been added to encourage families to bring the youngest members of their family in to the home. While a new approach to quality assurance puts residents, families and staff at the forefront of decision making processes; identifying areas for improvement, establishing actions and setting timescales to achieve positive changes.
Karen is proud that Llys y Seren has been shortlisted for a national award:
The Age Cymru Awards celebrate the hard work being done to make a positive impact on the lives of older people and we’re thrilled to be recognised alongside other leading organisations across Wales.”
Age Cymru will be announcing the winners of the awards at its Annual Awards and Gala Dinner in Cardiff on Friday 24 March.
