On March the 8th we recognised International Women’s Day throughout the group, taking some time out to share thoughts and stories about our experiences.
Two discussion groups were held in Newport and Swansea by our Chief Executive Amanda Davies and our Pobl Group Chair Wendy Bourton.
Some of the themes which emerged during the day focussed raising awareness of what can sometimes feel like taboo subjects such as what it’s like to go through the menopause and child on adult violence as well as how we can create opportunities to promote confidence building. There were also discussions about ways we can promote career development for part time workers and at the same time recognise the benefits and value that flexible working can give us.

We’ve already put some of the suggestions that came up into action and are exploring how best to take others forward. Our Equality and Diversity group will be taking on the task of raising awareness about the issues raised, while our Learning and Development team will look at flexible working patterns.
One topic which has already seen progress is the reporting of sickness absences. It followed a debate about how women could feel that it’s ok to be more open about issues that directly affect them. The addition of an option that allows you to specify ‘menopausal symptoms’ as the reason for absence can now help women be more specific about the issues that affect their health on a day to day basis. For us, the additional value of being better able to manage reasons for sickness absence and help with delivering a better work/life balance for everyone is all part of the #PressforProgress journey.
