Located in a highly prominent position within the Gaer, Newport, Derwen’s housing complex of 33 two bedroom apartments and 6 one bedroom apartments is starting to take shape.
The design comprises two communal blocks of self-contained apartments with a central hub and four walk-up apartments reflecting Derwen’s aspirations for a flagship older people’s development, whilst also meeting a clearly identified need within Newport.
The scheme has been partly funded with Social Housing Grant via the Welsh Government and the homes are available on a ‘tenure neutral’ basis, allocated via Newport City Council’s Home Options list.
The development is being undertaken by WRW Construction, and work is progressing well on site with blockwork currently at the first floor apartments and the steel frame for the community hub can now be clearly seen.
Derwen staff are regularly engaging with the local community and recently hosted a very popular MacMillan Coffee morning at the local church hall.
Maximising the opportunities for promoting social inclusion, for the benefit of both new residents and the surrounding community is important to Derwen, creating a wealth of health and wellbeing opportunities to encourage older people to live their lives to the full.
A Trainee Quantity Surveyor has been appointed on the project and further apprenticeships will be realised on site once trades such as carpentry commence their works.
The new homes are due to be ready in early Autumn 2017.
