Over 50 residents from our dedicated older person’s company Derwen descended en masse at Lysacht’s Institute for their 2018 annual Resident Star Awards last week.
The awards are held to celebrate the contribution residents are making to the many communities in which they live across Newport and the everyday acts of kindness that are making a big difference to the lives of their neighbours.
David Evans, Chair of Pobl Homes and Communities, opened the event by saying: “It is an absolute privilege to be part of such an uplifting ceremony and to be able to welcome the Mayor to the annual awards.
All six categories were closely contested and everybody nominated should feel extremely proud of themselves”.
He added:
“Pobl create older persons services around the concept of ‘Active Ageing’. This means as well as creating quality homes and communities, we are passionate that residents are able to live happy, healthy lives, having opportunities to continue doing the things they value, and making connections and friendships within the places they live.’
David Carpenter won the Digital Learner award: ‘I am very surprised and grateful to win this award. Learning Together is very well organised and I really like the one to one teaching – the young lady is very patient, obliging and spoke clearly which makes a big difference to me because of my hearing. My main topic was how to take photographs and it ended up with my interest in photographing flowers and going to the Chelsea Flower show’.
The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Newport, Councillor Malcolm Linton was guest of honour and presented the trophies and certificates to the worthy winners, as well as making the closing speech.
After the event The Mayor tweeted, ‘I’ve just finished at Derwen’s residents star awards at Lysaghts Institute in Newport where I met some lovely people and had a smashing time. The city should be proud of its citizens who give so much to their communities’.
Over 60 people and resident groups were nominated in six categories ranging from Digital Learner and Good Neighbour to Eco Warrior.
